The programme is supervised by Professor Kaare Aksnes and utilizes observations from the Nordic Optical Telescope at La Palma in the Canary Islands (Spain).

The project, called European Deep Sky Near Earth Objects Survey , was a joint initiative of the Spaceguard Foundation, the European Southern Observatory, ESA, the Nordic Optical Telescope Scientific Association and seven European countries.

On the technological side, the large format platinum silicon infrared camera (the outcome of collaboration between SAAO and Japan) was improved, the optical charge coupled device (CCD) was developed further, and a highly successful CCD autoguider was commissioned on the 1.9 metre telescope.

Lauer (National Optical Astronomy Observatories) and Marc Postman (Space Telescope Science Institute), using the Kitt Peak National Observatory apos s 4 and 2.1 meter telescopes in Arizona and the Cerro Tolodo Interamerican Observatory apos s 1.5 meter telescope in Chile, suggests that bulk flows can be identified over scales as large as some 600 million light years, almost three times larger than those found in previous investigations.
