B. Assessment of global trends

The provincial addictions service now provides assessment, counselling, in patient and out patient detoxification, early intervention programs, rehabilitation, aftercare, public education, family support, and adolescent programs, as well as in patient and out patient gambling addictions programs.

Efforts will also be undertaken to strengthen its participation in global assessments, such as, inter alia, Global International Waters Assessment, Global Marine Assessment, World Water Assessment and Global Forest Resources Assessment, as well as activities of the global environmental observing and monitoring systems, such as, inter alia, Global Ocean Observing System and Global Earth Observation System of Systems.

In addition, the UNEP Division of Early Warning and Assessment is involved in other global environmental assessment activities, such as the Global International Waters Assessment and the Global Marine Assessment, for which UNEP provides leadership and coordination, and the Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, in which UNEP is a key partner.

Regional assessments, again following an agreed global format, would provide the basis for a global assessment report.

Besides the assessment of land based activities being prepared by GESAMP for 1999, UNEP is also undertaking a project funded by the Global Environment Facility concerning Global International Waters Assessment (GIWA).

The only available global assessment of soil degradation is the UNEP and ISRIC Global Assessment of Soil Degradation (GLASOD) study carried out during the 1980s at a scale of 1 5 million.

The Meeting noted that the Division of Early Warning and Assessment of UNEP had a Scientific Assessment Branch that produced global, regional and thematic assessments and reports, such as the Global Environment Outlook, as well as sections dealing with ecosystems, the global environment outlook and capacity building and partnership.
