Recognizing the importance of WFP's enhanced effectiveness in emergency preparedness, a new division Analysis, Assessment and Preparedness (ODA) was formed, in which the Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit, the Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping (VAM) Unit and the Needs Assessment Unit coordinate their activities.

Notwithstanding some worthwhile gains in the past decade, much needs to be done to reach a satisfactory level of preparedness.

It is crucial that delegates push for transformational change that enables preparedness and saves lives. Furthermore, risk reduction needs to be integral to sustainable development strategies.

During 2004, emergency preparedness activities in the field intensified through increased coordination among emergency preparedness officers and focal points at the regional bureau level.

UNFPA role in emergency preparedness, humanitarian response, and transition and recovery

UNICEF is updating the Supply Division emergency preparedness and response plan.

Women and men, boys and girls are affected differently by disasters they have different levels of exposure to risk, risk perception and preparedness the physical and psychological impact of the disaster on them differs, as do their needs in the response, recovery and reconstruction phases.
