A great deal more progress is needed on the Millennium Goals related to gender and equality.

Although much progress is being made in the fight against malaria, major interventions are still needed.

On this, and on all the actions needed to achieve the MDGs, the Organization must continue to scrutinize progress and demand greater effort wherever it is needed.

Several difficult areas remain, however, where further progress is needed for the European Commission to consider that significant progress has been achieved across all 16 reform priorities.

Areas where assistance is needed

Institutional clarity is sorely needed.

The strategy document that resulted from that conference, called Te Kakeega II, provides my Government with a good assessment of the progress made in meeting the MDGs and of what further action is needed.

While participation has improved in the United Nations Register of Conventional Arms and the Standardized Instrument for Reporting Military Expenditures, greater progress with a view to universal participation is needed, particularly on military expenditures.

Good progress was being made in the consultations on some of them, but the European Union needed more time to finalize a few outstanding issues.

Therefore, it is highly encouraging that since our discussion of this issue in April 2004, considerable progress has been achieved in mobilizing much needed international support and broader involvement on the part of all stakeholders.

The African Development Bank welcomes the outcome of this special gathering, which is an opportunity for the international community to review the progress made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to assess the extra push that is needed.
