For most of my research career, I've been using accelerators, such as the electron accelerator at Stanford University, just up the road, to study things on the smallest scale.

Work on the development of a compact high temperature reactor that produces hydrogen, which could be the most important energy carrier in the future, as well as the development of accelerator driven systems that could sustain growth with thorium systems and enable incineration of long lived radioactive wastes, is progressing well.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) rises to the opportunity. By smashing protons together with unprecedented energy, monitoring the many particles that emerge from the collisions, and reconstructing the primary events that produced them, physicists will in effect have constructed the fastest, highest resolution microscope ever, with each proton taking a snapshot of the other s interior.

But the precision experiments required to measure the strong force can be designed and built with known technology. So two large groups of physicists one concentrated around the Brookhaven and Jefferson National Laboratories in the United States, and the other around CERN in Geneva are proposing to restart the investigation of electron proton interactions.

In order to meet the growing environment related demands on space rockets, widen the sphere of their application and increase the payloads carried under their nose cone, the basic models of the Proton and Soyuz carrier rockets, which account for up to 80 per cent of satellite launches annually, have been modernized in recent years.

But, at larger distances, comparable to the proton radius, the force becomes really strong, and a very large number of gluons is involved, forming complicated structures that are not well known today. Therefore, for some time, it was not expected that the properties of the strong force could be directly derived from the properties of gluons.

Meanwhile, on the policy front, advanced country monetary policy cohesion is giving way to a multi track system, with the European Central Bank stepping harder on the stimulus accelerator, while the US Federal Reserve eases off. These factors are sending the global economy into the final quarter of the year encumbered by profound uncertainty in several areas.

Finding what was, until then, just a theoretical prediction required one of the largest and most complex scientific undertakings ever attempted the creation of the particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, near Geneva. The research carried out at the LHC is now likely to steer our understanding of the universe from the smallest elementary particles to our study of cosmology.

CAMBRIDGE Modern physics and cosmology suggest that basic truths about how nature operates, and how our universe arose, are visible only to those who can see events that occur faster than the time it takes for light to cross a proton, and whose vision can resolve sub nuclear distances. Fortunately, that does not rule out humans, for we can augment the eyes we were born with.
