This need is particularly great in the realm of new renewable technologies where the institutions and infrastructures for information sharing are less mature than for more traditional energy technologies.

A particularly urgent priority must be placed on increasing the share of modern renewable technologies in the world's energy mix.

Examples of UNIDO's rural energy projects being developed or replicated include renewable energy based electricity generation for isolated mini grids, renewable energy based rural ICT systems and the application of modern biomass technologies in rural areas.

To its credit, Turkey has begun to invest heavily in sustainable technologies. The country is rich in wind, geothermal, and other renewable energy, and will most likely become a global exporter of advanced green innovations.

At least for the next few decades, it will also require accepting a diverse mix of energy sources and technologies, with increased attention to be given to renewable sources of energy (see sect. II above).

It is therefore important that they should be assisted, particularly in rural areas, in their efforts to develop services related to the use of renewable energy sources and to local mastery of environment friendly technologies.

Emphasis should be on affordabililty and cost reduction, on innovative business and financing models and on cost effective, consumer friendly, cost recovery models, recognizing that different renewable technologies offer different opportunities and face different constrains.

By contrast, new renewable technologies are gaining traction, illustrating a fundamental shift in international energy policy and investment strategies. Last year, China, Germany, Japan, and India generated more power from renewables than from nuclear for the first time.
