A minute ago we were talking about reputations.

There was lots of money and reputations at stake.

(i) For respect of the rights or reputations of others

I realize that certain... of you gentlemen have very high reputations in your own countries.

So non Americans should be more appreciative of America s deficits. Do people think it is easy for a 12 trillion dollar economy to spend beyond its means year after year just to prop up other countries reputations for stability?

Much the same is true for organizations like FIFA. When sponsors like Coca Cola or Adidas believe that their reputations will be tarnished by association with an organization engaged in corrupt practices, they will take their brand management dollars elsewhere.

In the long run, this does not bode well for their global reputations, which depend on users trust in the openness and independence of their products and services. One day, perhaps, censorship will no longer make good business sense anywhere.

Pandering to authoritarian regimes and opaque business interests is not a wholesome enterprise. The contemporary alliance of Western interests in the arts and higher education no less than in sports with rich, undemocratic powers involves compromises that might easily damage established reputations.

While many people are up in arms about Facebook s shifting privacy policies, millions of others are calmly managing their reputations online, using the tools that Facebook and other social Web sites provide. In fact, Facebook has helped them learn how to do that.

In foreign policy as well, both countries reputations are burdened with the problems of longstanding disputes over Taiwan and Kashmir. Moreover, in the US, the attraction of an authoritarian China is limited by the concern that it could become a future threat.

Any restrictions that may be imposed on the right to freedom of expression must be provided by law and justified as being necessary for respect of the rights or reputations of others or for the protection of national security or public order.

The Government adds that, as stipulated by article 19.3 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the right to freedom of expression can be restricted by law for respect of rights or reputations of others and for protection of public order.

Both of India s last two presidents had distinguished themselves in professional careers before being elected one in the Foreign Service and the other in nuclear physics and their reputations were above reproach. The Working Group believes that the activities carried out by Mr. Yang were not of a nature to justify the Government apos s resorting to the admissible restrictions, as laid down by the Korean law, which are necessary for the respect of rights or reputations of others, or for the protection of public order.

The best INGOs develop strong reputations quickly, sustain them indefinitely, and exercise real influence on policymaking. But they operate in a highly competitive environment, and will be on a fast track to losing their way if they come to be seen as no longer meeting real needs, remaining sharply focused, or being uncompromising in maintaining their independence and professionalism.

We are, however, surprised at how few of them have marked their beliefs to market in any sense. Furthermore, the Working Group considers that it does not appear from the analysis of the facts submitted to its appreciation that the persons concerned had exercised their above mentioned rights by resorting or by inciting to violence, or that, in their activities, they had harmed the rights or reputations of others, national security, public order or public health or morals.

American Life Project (http pewinternet.org Reports 2010 Reputation Management.aspx) indicate that young people manage their reputations online more carefully than do older people. I don t think that means that the young care more about privacy in fact, I think Zuckerberg is right when he says, People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people.

In view of the restrictions provided by the Korean law, under which the exercise of these rights is limited by the prohibition of a third party intervention in a labour dispute, it remains to be seen whether the activities carried out by Mr. Yang could have harmed the rights and reputations of others or could have harmed public order which the Government claims they did.

On the third condition, while the right to freedom of expression may be restricted, to protect the rights and reputations of others , and in this instance, to safeguard the administration of justice, the powers of the Supreme Court provided for under Sri Lankan law for contempt of court, including the power to impose prison sentences, are wholly disproportionate and cannot be justified as being necessary for this end.

The problem with all of this lies in the risk that Vargas Llosa and so many other Latin American public intellectuals run whenever they throw their considerable reputations and talents into the political arena. Whether they actually make a difference or are mistakenly perceived to have made even a minor contribution to a given cause (my own case with Vicente Fox s election as Mexico s president in 2000), they are held responsible for the results, for better or for worse.
