The West African Economic and Monetary Union reported that road transport remained the main mode of transport in the Economic and Monetary Union region, accounting for more than 90 per cent of trade within the subregion.

Measures to improve the transit transport system included renovation of the transport fleet, development of transit roads, promotion of road safety, simplification of documentation and regulations, development and completion of border terminals and active participation in international and regional cooperative schemes.

The Bank also provided assistance to the updating of the Northern Corridor Transit Agreement, including the Northern Corridor Transit Transport Coordination Authority.

We commend the active work of the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), which deals with a total of 11 international conventions and protocols that regulate traffic rules, road signs and signals and questions relating to the state of road transport infrastructure.

The Protocol provides for the simplification of procedures and requirements for the transit transport of dangerous goods in ASEAN countries, using the Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Model Regulations and the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Goods by Road.

In this connection, the completion of rehabilitation work on 143 kilometres of the 194 kilometre Beni Bunia road has opened up the possibility of reducing air transport of materiel, from fuel to rations, through the use of more economical surface transport options.
