Iranians had had the temerity to elect a progressive, secular prime minister who believed that the country s oil belonged to its people, not to the United Kingdom or the US. And few Americans recall that after the coup, the CIA installed a brutal police state under the Shah.

Fear of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is only marginally involved in an uprising that it did not initiate and has no hope of controlling, is no excuse for trying to save a failing regime. The tragic consequences of eleventh hour attempts to save the Shah in Iran should not be forgotten.

Iranians vividly remember the overthrow, orchestrated by the CIA and British intelligence, of the elected government of Mohammad Mosaddegh in 1953. They remember the West s prolonged support for the hated Shah, and for Iraq in its brutal war with Iran in the 1980s, even after Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein employed chemical weapons.

After all, as time passed, the ostensibly pragmatic clientelism of the Cold War proved far from ideal. Indeed, in many cases the Shah of Iran, Cambodia s Lon Nol, Chile s Augusto Pinochet, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo s Mobutu Sese Seko, to name a few it led to long term insecurity and disorder.

STONY BROOK, NY Iran s continued unrest, now extending through the 30th anniversary of the revolution that toppled the Shah, raises the question of whether the Islamic Republic is about to fall. As in 1979, millions of Iranians have taken to the streets, this time to protest electoral fraud in the presidential vote last June.

Relations between the two countries collapsed in 1980, after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini came to power in Iran s Islamic Revolution and severed ties in response to Egypt s formal recognition of Israel the previous year. Egypt s then president, Anwar El Sadat, granted the exiled Shah of Iran permission to live in Egypt, and supported Iraq in its eight year war with the Islamic Republic.

Iran s first post revolution prime minister, Mehdi Bazargan, reportedly once said that the real leader of the 1979 revolution was not Ayatollah Khomeini but rather the Shah, who united diverse groups of people against him. Today, a somewhat similar dynamic exists the two individuals arguably most responsible for the opposition s resilience are not Mousavi and Karroubi, but Ahmadinejad and Khamenei.

As the future of both Pakistan and its president, Pervez Musharraf, wallow in uncertainty in the wake of Benazir Bhutto s assassination, parallels are being drawn to the 1979 fall of the Shah and the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Once again, a pro American autocrat seems to be rapidly losing his grip on power, with his US ally only half heartedly standing by him.

Iranian intelligence has assassinated more than 400 Iranian dissidents outside of Iran, including the last prime minister under the Shah, Shapour Bakhtiar, and four Kurds in Berlin s Mikonos restaurant in 1992 (a German judge later officially named Iran s Supreme Leader as one of the senior officials involved in the terrorist attack). Similarly, the Quds Force of Iran s Revolutionary Guard has carried out hundreds of operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and elsewhere.

Welcoming also the contacts between the Special Mission and various non warring Afghan parties and personalities, and supporting calls by these independent Afghans for an end to the fighting and any proposals that might advance the cause of peace, including the efforts of independent Afghan personalities, many of whom support the proposal of the former King of Afghanistan, Zahir Shah, for the convening of a loya jirgah to promote a political settlement,

Meanwhile, India has already opened up road communications linking the East Indian state of Manipur to North Myanmar, with India s Border Roads Organization completing the first all weather road connecting the two countries. And, in Central Asia, India has projects at Ayni Air Base near Dushanbe in Tajikistan, including a functioning field hospital (where the late Ahmed Shah Massoud, the leader of Afghanistan s anti Soviet war, died following an assassination attempt on September 9, 2001).
