We stress that environmental sustainability is key to meeting all the other Millennium Development Goals.

Indeed, sustainability and poverty eradication were major strategic goals in the UNESCO Medium Term Strategy, 1996 2001.

(c) Pursuing financial policies that ensure sustainability and avoid discontinuities that are in practice prejudicial to the Millennium Development Goals.

These eight goals range from eradicating extreme poverty, providing universal primary education, and reducing health threats, to ensuring environmental sustainability.

The capacity to innovate can be developed to contribute to the poverty reduction and sustainability targets of the Millennium Development Goals.

Unlike the other goals, the target corresponding to MDG 7 (Ensure environmental sustainability) is not established in specific quantitative terms or with particular timelines.

(b) We emphasize that debt sustainability is essential for underpinning growth and underline the importance of debt sustainability to the efforts to achieve national development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, recognizing the key role that debt relief can play in liberating resources that can be directed towards activities consistent with poverty eradication, sustained economic growth and sustainable development

Debt relief and debt sustainability were also issues that needed to be addressed as soon as possible in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

In addition, progress on goals 4, 5 and 6 is dependent on goal 7, on environmental sustainability, and goal 8, on global partnership for development.

Ministers and Government Representatives also reaffirm their commitment to achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, in particular the goals to halve the proportion of people living in extreme poverty and to achieve environmental sustainability by 2015.

The more closely NGOs and States parties worked together, the more likely it was that they would achieve their common goals of peace, security and sustainability.

Debt sustainability needs to be redefined to enable the least developed countries to achieve the goals contained in the Brussels Programme of Action without an increase in debt ratio.

The management of key natural resources such as freshwater, mineral and forest based resources and energy will be particularly crucial in achieving the sustainability goals of the Habitat Agenda.
