The role of cities in sustainable development was enormous.

Cities were the centre of attention for all policies. Sustainable development in cities was the basic challenge of the Millennium Development Goals.

The Sustainable Cities Programme was also able to provide substantive inputs on sustainable development to Habitat II based on specific local operational experience.

And if we're going to really, truly become sustainable cities, we need to think a little differently.

The GEO Cities process was launched in Dakar, Nairobi and Lusaka in close collaboration with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat), under the Sustainable Cities Programme.

UN Habitat was therefore to be commended for its Sustainable Cities Programme and for the Global Urban Observatory.

A number of programmes are addressing participatory governance to some extent, such as Safer Cities, the Urban Management Programme, the Sustainable Cities Programme and the Training and Capacity Building Programme.

The Sustainable Cities Programme organized many city level consultations with all stakeholders, as a result of which action programmes have been launched on both land and infrastructure issues in a number of cities.

Also in the area of capacity building, the UNCHS (Habitat) UNEP Sustainable Cities Programme (SCP) has been supporting the Sustainable Katowice Agglomeration Project in Poland which brings together 13 municipalities for joint planning and action for environmentally sustainable development.

The first segment was devoted to the involvement of cities in international policy, city to city cooperation and exchange between cities and local governments on the achievements of sustainable urban development through municipal cooperation.

An urban SDG, promoting inclusive, productive, and resilient cities, would greatly empower tens of thousands of cities worldwide to take up the cause of sustainable development for their own citizens, their countries, and the world.

Staff members involved in the Sustainable Cities Programme in the Urban Development Branch participated in the campaigns in the Philippines and Brazil.

The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and the Sustainable Cities Programme were other initiatives that demonstrated the potential of such partnerships.

Compact, well connected cities that feature efficient public transportation systems cities like Barcelona are healthier and more sustainable. Moreover, the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate estimates that such cities could reduce capital requirements for urban infrastructure by more than 3 trillion over the next 15 years.

Some cities are already transforming themselves from only being consumers of natural resources into important resource conserving, health improving, sustainable generators of resources.

While a stable and secure environment was essential to the sustainable development of cities, the increase in crime was associated with an increase in social exclusion.

For example, regional approaches in the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements are promoted as part of the urban management, sustainable cities and community development programmes.

But because of what Snow did, because of this map, because of the whole series of reforms that happened in the wake of this map, we now take for granted that cities have 10 million people, cities like this one are in fact sustainable things.

UNEP and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat) have been cooperating for more that a decade in the joint Sustainable Cities Programme, including through the development of capacity building tools for urban environmental management and the GEO for Cities series of reports.

(e) Taking into account the linkages between urbanization and the environmental and developmental effects of consumption and production patterns in cities, thus promoting more sustainable patterns of urbanization

Sustainable development offers a new concept for the world economy in the twenty first century. Rather than focusing solely on income, sustainable development encourages cities, countries, and the world to focus simultaneously on three goals economic prosperity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

I would like to say, if we want to have a sustainable world we have to work with everything what's said, but don't forget the cities and the children.

He said that cities were the places where sustainable development was concentrated and where economic and social development, culture, regional integration and environment were at the centre of attention.

In addition, activities related to environmentally sustainable development, mega cities and urban development and science and technology are likely to form the basis of the Institute s first academic programme.

The assembled mayors and local authorities from all continents will seek to promote the sustainable development of cities and their hinterlands in the light of problems created by desertification.

Given that promoting sustainable urbanization and improving coordination would bolster progress in other priority areas (including women s rights, climate change, youth unemployment, and literacy), sustainable urbanization must become a bureaucratic priority. And it must be complemented by a technological disruption, with investments channeled toward developing and distributing innovations that would make cities more livable, efficient, and sustainable.

I believe that the only way that it is possible for us to construct genuinely sustainable homes and cities is by connecting them to nature, not insulating them from it.

The key messages that were important for sustainable urbanization were to unite cities, support decentralization, attack social exclusion and lack of human rights, and fight for the right to shelter.
