(14) The Committee is concerned at the persistence of vigilante justice.

A troubling development is the formation of vigilante groups by some Liberians.

Reports indicate that such vigilante groups have also been established elsewhere in Liberia.

Increasing resort to privatization of public space, to private policing and to vigilante and mob justice

The Government indicated that the activity of private vigilante groups had been rejected by the highest governmental authorities.

There were also numerous Israeli arrest campaigns and worrying reports of increased settler vigilante attacks against Palestinian civilians in West Bank villages.

With respect to the concerns expressed by the Representative concerning vigilante or self defence groups, his Government had no policy to promote or encourage vigilantism.

Conversely, many poorer neighbourhoods may feel that they must resort to carrying guns, informal policing and mob or vigilante justice in order to protect themselves from violence.
