But it was only when I interviewed Mario Moretti, the head of the Red Brigades, the man who kidnapped and killed Aldo Moro, Italian former prime minister, that I finally realized that terrorism is actually business.

Second, it is possible, though not easy, to choose fiscal consolidation packages that are more growth friendly than others. There is the obvious distinction between investment spending and current expenditure, which Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti has emphasized.

The willingness to give up power if necessary is one of the advantages that professors bring to such positions. (The ECB presidency then went to another economist and technocrat, Mario Draghi, who is, in fact, the perfect man for the job.)

I am delighted that this message is increasingly echoed by the political mainstream, including most recently by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi.

With Mario Monti s premiership, Italy has mobilized its best people, and neither Italy nor Europe will get a better government for the foreseeable future. If Monti s administration is toppled either in parliament or in the streets the EU s fourth largest economy could come crashing down.

Members of the eurozone, however, lacked such an option. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi was eventually able to pursue policies aimed at devaluing the common currency, but not before years of painful austerity, deep recession, social strife, and political instability in many eurozone member countries.

The lesson is that Commissioners should focus on their specific tasks, bearing in mind the interests of the EU rather than those of their country of origin. Mario Monti, the successful Commissioner for Competition, happened to be Italian, but nobody ever accused him of pursuing an Italian agenda.

Then, in July, came ECB President Mario Draghi s famous assurance to do whatever it takes to save the euro.

For example, The Economist s recent portrait of Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti shows that Italy continues to be stymied by labor rules that make businesses reluctant to expand beyond 15 employees (after which it becomes hard for a firm to downsize). To work smoothly, expansive macroeconomic policies require compatible microeconomic rules.
