We make maps of these mountain ranges with sound, with sonar, and this is one of those mountain ranges.

In the graph of sonar the top line represents the surface while the curve traced by the pen reproduces the relief fund.

For example, in oceanography, a lexicon of dolphin language is actually being created by basically visualizing the sonar beams that the dolphins emit.

456. An important side benefit of the recent increase in cable laying activities has been the collection of new information about seabed characteristics resulting from the bathymetric, side scan sonar and sub bottom profiling surveys, usually covering a 1,000 metre wide corridor along the cable routes.

The central topics of this cruise will be (a) the acquisition and interpretation of acoustic reflectivity data (utilization of the side scan sonar function of modern swath sounding systems) (b) seafloor sampling for calibration and ground truthing of digital acoustic data and (c) the investigation of benthic communities (taxonomy, composition of assemblages, biodiversity).

The survey, carried out in October and November 2004 by the oceanographic vessel B O García del Cid, resulted in, inter alia (a) a geopositioned mosaic of sonographs covering the strip on the two platforms from about 1,000 km of sonar sidescan profiles (b) a geophysical map of approximately the same zones from some 700 km of geo wave (topographical) lines and (c) a seabed sampling using a gravity sampler to help interpret the preceding sonic and seismic surveys.
