It should provide the names and numbers of those disarmed to the AU and store weapons in safe locations, with AU oversight.

In the meantime, the AU Commission and AU troop and police contributing countries and donors will have to proceed diligently with the expansion of AMIS.

Hindsight suggests that the authorities should have done just that. Faced with foreign opposition, the government should have announced its decision to restructure as a fait accompli.

During the reporting period, UNMIS, through the United Nations Assistance Cell to the African Union at AU headquarters, undertook intensive consultations with the AU Commission regarding proposals for United Nations assistance to AU in the procurement and management of aviation and ground fuel.
