According to the United States Census Bureau's official census, the population of Guam in 2000 was 154,805, an increase of 21,653 (16 per cent) since the 1990 census.2 In July 2004, the Central Intelligence Agency estimated the population to be 166,090, an increase of 7.25 per cent since 2000.3 According to the census, the ethnic and racial composition of Guam's population is 37 per cent Chamorro, who are indigenous to the Territory.

According to the latest census conducted in 2001, Anguilla's population is 11,561.

The 1998 census results show the illiterate population to be 48.84 million.

Total area is 796,095 sq.km with an estimated population of 148.723 million based on a (March 2004) projection of population census of 1998.

New Caledonian officials estimate that at least 10 per cent of the population boycotted the census.

Data from the last population census on October 2000 were used as the basis.

In the 2000 census, 36,563 persons, or 44.6 of the population aged six and over, indicated that they had taken physical exercise during the week prior to the census week. Of them, 46.6 were women.

Another problem with the Ministry's data is that the enrolment rates are based on population projections that vary from one census to another and are not corrected with each new census.

Moreover, although the most reliable source for calculating literacy rates are population censuses, the main limitation of this source is that census years are almost 10 years apart.

The census
