The National Cervical Screening Programme, established in 1991, is aimed at reducing incidence and mortality through the screening and early detection of abnormalities of the cervix, allowing medical intervention to avert the possible progression to cervical cancer.

The cervical cancer screening and treatment project began operations in health facilities in 2000. These have included

This was in response to PEI having one of the highest rates of cervical cancer and lowest rates of screening.

In 2000, the provincial government supported a social marketing campaign to increase awareness of the importance for women to be regularly screened to prevent cervical cancer.

Early detection of breast cancer can be done individually, while cervical cancer can now be detected through the use of acid, since pap smear is quite expensive.

There are other concerns with regard to reproductive health relating to the health of the aged, abortion issues, cervical and breast cancer, infertility, gender based violence and discrimination.

In January 2001, the provincial government supported establishment of the PEI Pap Screening Program with the goal to reduce the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer in PEI.

And our minds immediately turned to cervical cancer in women, which is spread by a virus, and to the AIDS epidemic, which is associated with a number of different types of cancer.

The National Cervical Screening Programme, which had been operating in the Mid Western Health Board since 2000, screened women in the 25 60 age bracket at five yearly intervals free of charge.

The age standardized incidence rate of all cervical cancers declined to 7.3 per 100,000 women for all women in Australia in 2001, and to 9.5 per 100,000 women in the target group.

True, cancer deaths have dropped chiefly because of long delayed and still poorly supported efforts to curb smoking. Successes with screening and treatment of breast, colo rectal, and cervical cancer have also helped.

And obviously there's been tremendous practical applications associated with this world things like the eradication of smallpox, the advent of a vaccine against cervical cancer, which we now know is mostly caused by human papillomavirus.

In addition, supply and demand vary widely from region to region.

There is some evidence of relatively low participation in routine breast cancer screening among women of Turkish and Moroccan origin and of relatively low participation in routine cervical cancer screening among women of Moroccan and Antillean origin.

The age standardized incidence rate of micro invasive cervical cancer was 1.5 per 100,000 women in 2001 for women in the target age group of 20 69 years and 1.0 per 100,000 for women of all ages.

Yet, the impacts differ from field to field, from region to region.

Existing HPV vaccines can prevent up to 70 of cervical cancer cases, and new vaccines are in the pipeline that will improve this record further. Likewise, hepB vaccines are 95 effective at preventing infection and its chronic consequences.

And this region, it's a very small region it's less than one millimeter.

This is particularly the case among women, who show an increased incidence of cervical, uterine and breast cancer however, rates of early detection are still too low as a result of cultural problems and insufficient access to health services.
