What could be easier, more filling or healthier for your family than broiling a steak?

And the cod are there because they are feeding on all the copepods and amphipods.

You know, I think people go into a restaurant, and somebody orders a steak, and we all know where steak comes from, and somebody orders a chicken, and we know what a chicken is, but when they're eating bluefin sushi, do they have any sense of the magnificent animal that they're consuming?

Why can I say, I'll take my steak medium rare, I need size six shoes, but I won't say, Would you praise me this way?

My grandmother grew up in Glasgow, back in the 1920s and '30s when rickets was a real problem and cod liver oil was brought in.

It's difficult to imagine that two, or some historians would say three world wars were fought during the colonial era for the control of cod.

Yet left to their own devices, cod are thought to live for at least thirty years. It is a testament to the great efficiency with which we exploit living marine resources that fish like cod are now much more likely to die at the hands of fishermen than for all other reasons put together, once they get into the fisheries.

Indeed, there is evidence from many fisheries of earlier maturation such changes take place fast enough to be detected over the decades. For example, early in the twentieth century, you would not find a mature cod in the North Sea less than about 50 centimeters in length, whereas by the 1980's mature cod were as small as 15 centimeters.

And we were on Cape Cod, a place, obviously, of great inspiration, and I picked up this book, The Elements of Style, at a yard sale.

The next time you dine on sushi or sashimi, or swordfish steak, or shrimp cocktail, whatever wildlife you happen to enjoy from the ocean think of the real cost.

This is a shark that was actually landed in Howth just before Christmas, illegally, because you're not allowed to do that under E.U. law, and was actually sold for eight euros a kilo as shark steak.

Tons of food gets plowed under the ground because there s so much of it farmers can t get the prices they want. Tons of cheap food (corn, for instance) is used to create more expensive food (like steak).

A thousand years ago, the Norse settlers of my home city of York ate cod that weighed as much as eight kilograms. We know this from archaeologists and the fascination they have for medieval waste heaps.

They would get dentures, and if you got dentures, you weren't going to be able to eat corn on the cob, you weren't going to be able to eat apples, you weren't going to be able to eat steak.

For example, spiny dogfish is partly substituting for cod in many European fish and chip shops. Sharks, too, are suffering from rapidly rising demand for shark fin soup, which is considered a delicacy in many parts of Asia.

Today s marine environment is truly under siege. When the explorer John Cabot sailed off the coast of Newfoundland more than 500 years ago, vast shoals of cod slowed down his ships crews could lower buckets over the side and fill them with fish.
