Several delegations welcomed the establishment of the ad hoc open ended informal working group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction.

The conservation of biological diversity remained a top priority for Malaysia as a member of the Group of Like Minded Megadiverse Countries, it was deeply concerned by the destruction of that diversity.

IUCN was committed to making biodiversity conservation work more effectively for the poor, including through its Conservation for Poverty Reduction Initiative.

In the near term, we note especially the opportunity for the Working Group to link marine scientific research, the conservation agenda and the identification of priority sites for special protection and management measures.

In February next year, an ad hoc open ended working group will meet to discuss complex issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction.
