Arrangements have been established for aquifers, such as the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, the Carpathians in Eastern Europe, the Danube River, the Sava River Basin in the Balkans and the Lake Victoria Basin.

(3) The Contracting Parties shall establish, on the basis of a harmonized methodology, domestic water balances, as well as the general water balance of the Danube River Basin.

Links will also be developed with the ongoing and future Global Environment Facility (GEF) regional projects under the international waters component, relating to the Danube River (pollution reduction and environmental management), the Black Sea (strategic action plan and environmental management), the Dnieper River Basin (strategic action programme), and the Caspian Sea (Caspian Sea Environment Programme).

(3) To this end the Contracting Parties, taking into account the urgency of water pollution abatement measures and of rational, sustainable water use, shall set priorities as appropriate and shall strengthen, harmonize and coordinate measures taken and planned to be taken at the domestic and international level throughout the Danube Basin aiming at sustainable development and environmental protection of the Danube River.

Cooperation could also be enhanced through the strengthening of existing river basin organizations and agreements.

F. Danube region
