31.7 The estimated requirements reported in table 31.2 above address the current end of service benefit liabilities for retired staff.

When there are lots of companies offering workers long term defined benefit retirement pensions, there are fewer advantages to the government in setting up a parallel defined benefit scheme and requiring workers to participate in it. After all, in such a world, workers who set great value on a defined benefit pension can go to work for firms that offer such pensions.

As a result, UNOPS will have to assess proactively what its current exposure is in regard to end of service and post retirement benefit liabilities.

It is Wal Mart. Private businesses are providing their workers with less and less in the form of defined benefit pensions, health insurance, and other forms of insurance against life s economic risks.

Today, the risks are seen to be much greater, and the benefits are seen to be less. As a result, an ever smaller slice of employers are offering anything like defined benefit pensions.

Minimizing the fluctuation between assets and the present value of liabilities requires matching the characteristics of liabilities with assets with similar characteristics and adjusting for inflation.
