A normal gap between supply and demand for some subset of currently produced commodities is not a serious problem, because it is balanced by excess demand for other currently produced commodities. As industries suffering from insufficient demand shed workers, industries benefiting from surplus demand hire them.

Despite the increased demand for commodities and the resultant high prices, gains were accruing to only a few countries.

Second, the world economy is vastly larger than in the past, so that demand for key commodities and energy inputs is also vastly larger.

However, China s large size and low per capita income and capital stock imply continued rapid growth in its demand for commodities. Thanks to supply constraints, China s import bill for commodities and metals is likely to offset its processing trade surplus in the near future.

At the same time, rapidly growing middle classes across the developing world would constitute a new source of demand. With their share of global GDP increasing, developing countries would sustain relative demand for commodities, thereby preventing prices from reverting to the low levels that prevailed in the 1980 s and 1990 s.

For example, the US consumes more than nine times as much oil as China on a per capita basis. As more of China s population converges to Western standards of consumption, demand for commodities and thus their prices will remain on an upward trajectory.

I believe that the key factors now are somewhat different from those that drove up food prices in 2008. Growth in global demand for food and feed commodities is still a major part of the story, as are biofuels.

In its resolution 59 224 on commodities the Assembly invited all relevant stakeholders to develop strong producer associations for commodities with an appropriate role for producers, including women.

In the short term, dollar depreciation does not affect supply and demand, but it does affect speculation and investment in oil futures markets. As the dollar declines, commodities including oil attract investors.
