Foreign enterprises are increasingly investing in emerging markets.

The issuance of risky junk bonds under loose covenants and with excessively low interest rates is increasing the stock market is reaching new highs, despite the growth slowdown and money is flowing to high yielding emerging markets.

Of more pressing immediate concern is the fact that capital is currently flowing to many countries regardless of whether they are ready to receive it. There are large current account surpluses among emerging markets (a big change from 1997, when most emerging markets had deficits).

The key questions now are whether global economic growth is self sustaining without QE, whether emerging markets output will continue to rise strongly, albeit at a slower pace, and whether current global financial reform efforts will be sufficient to prevent another crisis in emerging markets.

The answer to the emerging markets question would have been straightforward a few years ago. It is not today.

When financial markets discovered that supposedly riskless government bonds might be forced into default, they raised risk premiums dramatically. Indeed, the US stock market and many others have rebounded more than 100 since the lows of 2009 issuance of high yield junk bonds is back to its 2007 level and interest rates on such bonds are falling. Moreover, low interest rates are leading to high and rising home prices possibly real estate bubbles in advanced economies and emerging markets alike, including Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brazil, China, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Almost all major crises in emerging markets have been connected with shifts in exchange rates and monetary policy in advanced countries.

We are in the middle of a social and demographic shift that will both destroy and create consumer markets. The aging of developed markets is well known, but the latest data show that emerging markets are aging at an even faster pace.

The investment officer who covers the Japanese and Australian equity markets would become responsible for all developed Asian markets, with coverage expanded to Singapore and Hong Kong which are at present covered by the investment officer in charge of the emerging equity markets.
