As homeowners with large negative equity default, the foreclosed homes contribute to the excess supply that drives prices down further. And the lower prices lead to more negative equity and therefore to more defaults and foreclosures.

Monetary policy may have bolstered stock prices in two ways, either lowering the discount rate by compressing the equity risk premium, or simply reducing risk free rates for long enough to raise the present value of stocks. In either case, equity prices should level off at some point, allowing earnings to catch up, or even correct downward.

In these days of froth, the persistence of extraordinary policy accommodation in a financial system flooded with liquidity poses a great danger. Indeed, that could well be the lesson of recent equity and currency market volatility and, of course, plummeting oil prices.

In China s case, the government hoped that broader stock market participation achieved through efforts to bolster equity prices and promote lending for investment would make citizens more open to pro market reforms. Again, the approach proved too effective, and a bubble formed.

With over 80 home ownership, the epic boom in housing prices of the last ten years has spread deep into the American middle class. Equity holdings are somewhat more concentrated, but many middle class Americans have still benefited indirectly through their pension funds.

If a crisis was imminent, the markets clearly took no notice. And if the coalition government s budget cuts had improved expectations about future output, that greater confidence would have shown up in higher equity prices but there is no evidence of this, either.

ITHACA In recent months, emerging economies have experienced capital flow whiplash. Indications that the US Federal Reserve might taper its quantitative easing (QE) drove investors to reduce their exposure to emerging markets, sharply weakening their currencies and causing their equity prices to tumble.

Popular equity investments, such as shares in Safaricom, are already trading at unexpectedly low levels. If real estate prices were to fall dramatically, a chain reaction could occur, taking down big and small investors alike, and over time causing wide suffering to ordinary Africans.

Pay equity? Yes. Absolutely a feminist issue.

Speculators could have front run the bank in the markets, selling short, driving equity prices down, and forcing the French financial institution to sell into a bottomless pit. Is a forced bankruptcy in extremely fragile global financial markets what the French government wanted for Société Générale?
