Most donors provide general purpose contributions, which are primarily for core and programme support activities, and as special purpose contributions, which are exclusively used for project activities.

As a result, expenditure exceeded income for the general purpose fund to the amount of 6,587,331, whereas for special purpose funds a surplus of 5,528,079 was recorded.

Total unpaid pledges at 31 December 1997 under the general purpose fund amounted to 6,189,861 due from 20 countries, representing 20 per cent of total general purpose income for 1996 1997.
