The unification of Germany in 1990 was a case apart since under the German nationality law there had always been only one German nationality so that the citizens of the former German Democratic Republic had always been Germans.

German law thus allows nationality to be conferred automatically on people of German origin from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, but imposes stricter conditions, including renunciation of their original nationality, on the children of immigrants, including Turkish children who were born in and have long been living in Germany.

a) The nationality of a child of a mixed marriage shall be Indonesian, provided that the child does not yet have a nationality (Article 1).
