Denmark is a member of the Task Force for Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research.

So, my delegation welcomes the draft resolution on Holocaust remembrance and congratulates all those that sponsored it.

We commend the Secretary General's and this Assembly's recognition that Holocaust remembrance must be a universal commitment.

In particular, Canada applauds Israel and its Permanent Representative for achieving consensus on the resolution entitled Holocaust remembrance .

We fully share and understand the feelings of the sponsors with regard to the need for Holocaust remembrance.

It seeks to give expression to the commitment to Holocaust remembrance and education within the United Nations system.

That will constitute the most important tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and honour the Remembrance Day.

Or perhaps the weight of Holocaust remembrance has blinded Israel s leaders and distorted their thinking in ways that, at the time the State of Israel was created, the Holocaust itself almost miraculously did not.

We also support the draft resolution's request for the Secretary General to establish a programme of outreach on the Holocaust and the United Nations and to mobilize civil society for Holocaust remembrance and education.

In its final operative paragraph the draft resolution requests the Secretary General to establish a programme of outreach entitled The Holocaust and the United Nations , as well as measures to mobilize civil society for Holocaust remembrance and education.

On 1 November 2005, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on Holocaust remembrance (resolution 60 7), in which, among other items, it rejects any denial of the Holocaust as an historical event, either in full or in part .

The Task Force for International Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, to which many European Union member States belong, is a particularly effective way of ensuring high standards in the way we teach about the Holocaust in our schools, universities and communities.

We must all learn from the hard lessons of the past, and in that spirit we welcome the draft resolution on Holocaust remembrance as a timely initiative.

It is doing so in the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, which was set up following the Stockholm Declaration of January 2000.

It also builds on the Council of Europe's declaration in 2002 of an annual Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and for the Prevention of Crimes Against Humanity.

Holocaust Remembrance Day in Jerusalem this year again saw Israeli leaders competing with each other in feeding the gloom of the national psyche and public hysteria surrounding Iran s intentions.

Urges Member States to develop educational programmes that will inculcate future generations with the lessons of the Holocaust in order to help to prevent future acts of genocide, and in this context commends the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research

At that session, Member States affirmed the important role and responsibility of the United Nations in Holocaust remembrance and education to honour the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and to stand watch against the re emergence of such evil, for the benefit of future generations.

The consideration of the proposed item and the adoption of the proposed draft resolution (see annex II) would formalize and institutionalize Holocaust remembrance and education within the United Nations system.

As a country that suffered greatly from atrocities committed during the Second World War, the Republic of Korea has decided to become a sponsor of the draft resolution on Holocaust remembrance.

Therefore, we would have preferred it if the sponsors, in formalizing and institutionalizing Holocaust remembrance and education within the United Nations system through the resolution, had given equal attention to other human tragedies.

We would also like to express our appreciation to Secretary General Kofi Annan for his public support and commitment to the resolution, and for the issue of Holocaust remembrance and education in general.

Remembrance of the Holocaust today is our responsibility. It is to build our future on the knowledge and clear conscience of the past it is also to uphold a certain idea of man.

The Chinese delegation is in favour of adding the item entitled Holocaust remembrance to the agenda of the current session of the General Assembly and of adopting a draft resolution bearing the same title.

At that session, Member States committed themselves to the principle of Never again! and affirmed the important role and responsibility of the United Nations in Holocaust remembrance and education to honour the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and to stand watch against the re emergence of such evil for the benefit of future generations.

In December 2004, Romania became a full member of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, an organization that coordinates the efforts of its members for a better understanding of the Holocaust by promoting educational programmes on this issue programmes to commemorate the victims, as well as research programmes.

Setting up an annual Holocaust remembrance day in memory of the victims is a way to make future generations understand that they should not forget the tragedies that ravaged twentieth century Europe. This is also why, together with its European partners, Romania supports the draft resolution to establish such a day of remembrance.

As the generation of Holocaust survivors and liberators dwindles, the torch of remembrance, of bearing witness and of education must continue forward. It is our duty to the past and our commitment to the future.
