Mr. Flinterman sought clarification on the new Penal Code regarding the issue of custom or honour crimes.

In response to the question concerning the definition of custom killings and honour killings in the new Penal Code, the term custom killings implied, first and foremost, honour killings, while honour killings were always linked to a custom.

Ms. Tan requested further information on the issue of honour killings and virginity testing under the new Penal Code.

As she had indicated earlier, the Turkish Penal Code did not differentiate between the penalties for honour and custom killings.

Honour crimes were dealt with under the Penal Code and the Government would be eliminating all forms of discrimination against women in that area.

Honour crimes are not specifically defined in the Criminal Code, and motive is not mentioned in the murder statistics kept by the police and Public Prosecution Service.

The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act amends Sections 299, 302, 305, 308, 310, 311, 316, 324, 337, 338 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Sections 345, 401 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to ensure more effective prosecution of cases of the so called honour killings.
