Promoting safe and sustainable water supplies through improved water resources management

Access to water services has improved nationwide.

In some countries, payment for environmental services, for example to owners of upstream forests or downstream wetlands, has led to improved management of water resources at relatively low cost.

These would require inter alia improved soil health, agro forestry, water management, rural infrastructure services such as roads and means of transport, modern energy services and basic communication technologies.

The only way to sustainably reduce this massive burden of disease is through the use of safe drinking water, sanitation and improved hygiene practices, in particular hand washing with soap.

Still others might need deeper reservoirs, more modern filtration plants, or improved water transport schemes.
