The debate over the impact that new nickel projects will have on New Caledonia's pristine maritime environment began some years ago.

A training programme on marine environment protection was formulated and is used by the national Maritime Training and Fisheries Institutes in the region.

Obtaining observer status in the General Assembly has allowed the IHO to develop its assistance in creating electronic maritime charts that contribute to the sustainable exploitation of fisheries, other uses of the marine environment, the delimitation of maritime borders, and environmental protection.
