This Committee assumed the mandates of both the Committee on the Development and Use of New and Renewable Sources of Energy and the Committee on Natural Resources pertaining to energy.

7. The expanding settlements of the developing world increasingly need more natural resources, both raw materials and energy, to sustain their development process.

The Committee on Natural Resources and the Committee on New and Renewable Sources of Energy and on Energy for Development are to be merged into a single expert body to be named the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources for Development (Council resolution 1998 46, annex I). The members of the new Committee will be elected by the Council at its resumed substantive session of 1998.
