Capacity building for the production of nautical charts

The new vessel is 89 meters long, 18 meters wide, 7.2 meters deep and has a endurance of 10,000 nautical miles.

7. The coastal State shall delineate the outer limits of its continental shelf, where that shelf extends beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured, by straight lines not exceeding 60 nautical miles in length, connecting fixed points, defined by coordinates of latitude and longitude.

In this context, we are requesting that the International Hydrographic Organization intensify its efforts to build capacity in developing countries for the production of electronic nautical charts to provide data and information that can be used in fisheries activities and for other uses, such as the delimitation of maritime boundaries.

It follows from the above provisions of the Convention that a coastal State, which is entitled pursuant to the provisions of article 76 of the Convention to the continental shelf extending beyond 200 nautical miles, is required to submit to the Commission for its consideration information on the limits of its continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles.

Its continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, which is currently under examination by the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, is estimated to be 953,525 square kilometres.

In accordance with the provisions of article 76, a Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf beyond 200 nautical miles shall be established in conformity with the following articles.

The need to strengthen capacity building for the production of nautical charts, especially electronic charts, with the participation of the International Hydrographic Organization and funding institutions, was raised by one delegation.

Last year, Australia lodged with the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf its submission on the outer limit of the shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline.

Mexico reaffirms the importance of promoting capacity in the preparation of reliable nautical charts that ensure navigational safety and the protection of the environment, in particular vulnerable marine ecosystems such as coral reefs.

The Secretariat will also continue to study the developments relating to the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles in the light of the provisions of article 82, paragraph 4, of the Convention.

Activities cover pre school activities, literacy courses for women and income generating activities.

Many developing countries must, as a matter of urgency, build up their capacities in the areas of nautical charts production, ship building, the protection of the marine environment, marine science research and development, law enforcement at sea and the combating of maritime crimes.

According to the comprehensive foreign reports of the Central News Agency, the U.S. official who requested anonymity revealed that the United States Navy destroyer, USS Decatur, cruised into the 12 nautical mile territorial limit of Gaven Reef and Johnson Reef of the Nansha Islands.

The Commission is currently considering three new submissions regarding the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, and a number of coastal States, including Iceland, have advised it of their intention to make submissions in the near future.

Requests the Secretary General, in cooperation with the Member States, to continue supporting and organizing workshops or symposiums on scientific and technical aspects of the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, taking into account the deadline for submission

To that end, Japan, in cooperation with the United Nations University, is planning to host a symposium on scientific and technical aspects of the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, to be held in Tokyo from 6 to 7 March 2006.
