13. In its reply to the Secretary General dated 2 July 1997, Pakistan reported that it fully supported the global moratorium on large scale pelagic drift net fishing on the high seas. Pakistan also indicated that it did not allow large scale pelagic drift net fishing vessels in its exclusive economic zone nor did it give fishing licences to such vessels to operate in its waters.

One of the largest threats to their survival is pelagic industrial longline fishing.

In addition, the United States Coast Guard had detected in 1998 seven vessels conducting large scale pelagic drift net fishing operations on the high seas of the North Pacific five in the area south of the Aleutian Islands near the Russian Federation s exclusive economic zone.

There is also the offshore longline pelagic fishery with only one longline vessel in operation.

Using a similar approach, it estimates that 22,500 pelagic birds were lost in its territory.
