The Quartet envoys met yesterday in Jerusalem and discussed preparations for the disengagement initiative and how best to support Mr. Wolfensohn.

I believe, if I may say so, that this very much represents the position of all four members of the Quartet.

In this context, the Quartet stresses the urgent need for Israelis and Palestinians to coordinate directly and fully on withdrawal preparations.

The Quartet has decided, however, to extend his mandate for a further three month period, to the end of March 2006.

We believe that the road map and existing mechanisms, including the Quartet, are the best avenues for moving the parties forward.

We commend the efforts of the international community, particularly the Quartet, to ensure that the disengagement proceeds in a coordinated manner.

These developments enhance the prospect of reviving the peace process within the framework of the Quartet road map and should be welcomed.

We particularly appreciate the efforts of the Quartet and the personal engagement of its Special Envoy, Mr. James Wolfensohn, in that regard.

The Quartet strongly reiterated its commitment to the two state solution, and to Israeli withdrawal as a way to re energize the Roadmap.

The Quartet commends the Palestinian people's and leadership's commitment to democracy and attaches great importance to a successful continuation of the democratic process.

The Security Council also welcomes the upcoming Quartet' meeting at the ministerial level which will convene in the margins of the London meeting.

However, we have not seen any tangible progress towards the desired objective because the Quartet has left everything up to the occupying Power.

Civil society had played an active role in opposing the wall and required increased support from the United Nations acting through the Quartet.

The international community and, in particular, the Quartet have a crucial role to play to get the derailed peace process back on track.

With respect to the Quartet's engagement and activities, the Quartet has met in recent weeks to review the situation at this critical time.

Ongoing assistance by the international community, in particular members of the Quartet and countries of the region, constitutes a significant contribution to these efforts.

The European Union remained committed in close cooperation with its partners in the Quartet and in the Arab world to facilitating a final settlement.

It was regrettable that a number of the desired outcomes had not been achieved, despite the efforts of the Quartet and all concerned parties.

The Committee was encouraged by the efforts of the Quartet aimed at helping the parties to move towards the implementation of the road map.
