The only way to sustainably reduce this massive burden of disease is through the use of safe drinking water, sanitation and improved hygiene practices, in particular hand washing with soap.

The vulnerability of women from the point of view of health is a result of poor hygiene conditions coupled with the country's economic problems and traditional practices, in particular early marriage, early motherhood and the refusal to attend health centres where they exist.

Providing children with high quality hygiene education helps to give them the basis for a healthy and productive life, creates future demand for safe water and sanitation facilities and, where integrated with a community programme, can help to turn children into change agents for the whole community.

In view of women's role in household sanitation and hygiene, awareness raising campaigns can be effective when targeted to this audience, mobilizing women to spread the sanitation and hygiene message.
