Noting the increasing voluntary use of collective action clauses in sovereign bond contracts by both developing and developed countries,

Global stock markets have, overall, reached new highs. And credit markets show low spreads, while long term bond yields have fallen in most advanced economies.

Interest rate spreads on Italian sovereign debt have widened, but not sharply. External investors may not be rushing for the exits, but they are not piling in, either.

And, in order for the euro to fall far enough, the risk of default in Greece would need to be so large, and the contagion to sovereign spreads of PIIGS so severe that the widening of those spreads would cause a double dip eurozone recession before currency depreciation could yield benefits.

Thus, the recent problems faced by Greece are only the tip of a sovereign debt iceberg in many advanced economies (and a smaller number of emerging markets). Bond market vigilantes already have taken aim at Greece, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Iceland, pushing government bond yields higher.
