At the end of 1995, there were 15 African countries with stock markets.

Of the more than 20 stock markets in Africa, most are undercapitalized they account for some 7 per cent of the capitalization of emerging stock markets and list no more than a handful of companies.

This description of stock markets in emerging countries is not wrong, just biased, because the same description applies to stock markets in advanced countries. Indeed, the politics of stock markets does not stop with taxes. On the contrary, almost every activity of government has an impact on corporate profits, and in turn, on the stock market.

The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) undertakes regular training and orientation activities to encourage the establishment of active stock markets.

At the same time, SMEs face increased competition in both domestic and international markets.

In many developing regions, stock markets are assuming a larger role in resource mobilization, although the practice is not yet widespread.

Despite the increased participation by women in wage work, gender segmentation in labour markets persists.

Some participants drew attention to the increased concentration of global markets for some products at the same time as national markets were attracting more players.

Furthermore, as Harvard s Jeffrey Frankel has pointed out, regulators increased margin requirements several times this year, making it harder to buy stocks with borrowed money. And, as with all stock markets, shifts in sentiment that are not connected to fundamentals can also drive volatility.

In addition, stock markets could be used to generate green funds, but this would require more capacity building in developing such instruments.

This will require additional resources to finance investments, in concert with increased access to export markets.

The increased presence of TNCs in local markets in developing countries does not always benefit SMEs.

The development of stock exchanges has also been given priority in many countries, but next to the banking system and the potential benefits of domestic bond markets, stock markets are of relatively marginal importance for development, especially for the development of small and low income economies in the early stages of financial development.

As in most countries, the share of multi family buildings in the total housing stock has increased greatly in recent years.

Those countries required increased technical assistance, not increased restrictions, for access of their products to global markets and for progressive integration into the world trading system.

Increased cooperation could help those States to have a stronger voice in world markets and international forums.

This leads to increased mobility and flexibility in the labour markets of Germany and the European Union.

The increase in the number of multiplex cinemas has increased the penetration of foreign audiovisual products into developing countries' markets.

Efficient transport and trade facilitation provided the background for increased competitiveness of developing countries and allowed access to global markets.

The fund raising strategy calls for increased investment in legacies in key National Committee markets where opportunities have been identified.

More vegetables became available in markets, increased income was generated by farmers and farming communities, and reintegration was greatly facilitated.
