Implementation of the UNAMSIL United Nations country team transition plan

Encourages UNAMSIL and the United Nations country team in Sierra Leone to continue their close collaboration to ensure a seamless transition from peacekeeping to peacebuilding, including through the implementation of their joint Transition Plan

Considerable progress was made towards completing the tasks set out in the joint UNAMSIL United Nations country team transition plan for 2005.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina Minister of Defence has been charged with leading a team of experts in coordinating this logistically challenging transition task.

UNAMSIL and the United Nations country team have continued to implement the activities outlined in their joint transition plan aimed at ensuring a seamless transition from peacekeeping to peacebuilding in Sierra Leone, while facilitating the implementation of the Mission's exit strategy.

Those team sites will remain operational until 31 December 2005, when all the police personnel will be repatriated, with the exception of a small team of 10 officers, who will be temporarily retained in Freetown to facilitate a seamless transition to UNIOSIL.

Finally, throughout the transition, MINUGUA worked closely with the country team to ensure continuity on key technical assistance projects, especially on land issues, citizen participation, public security and the justice sector.

The strategy will build upon the work accomplished under the transition plan for 2005, developed jointly by UNAMSIL and the United Nations country team, and will focus on peace consolidation through enhancing economic governance and creating lasting national capacities for conflict prevention.

Requests that the Secretary General transfer all functions performed by the special political mission in Sudan (UNAMIS) to UNMIS, together with staff and logistics of the office as appropriate, on the date when UNMIS is established, and to ensure a seamless transition between the United Nations and existing monitoring missions, namely the Verification Monitoring Team, the Joint Monitoring Mission, and the Civilian Protection Monitoring Team
