57 32. Observer status for the Inter Parliamentary Union in the General Assembly

The European Union is concerned by actions that could prejudge a final status agreement.

Considering the unique status of the Inter Parliamentary Union as a world organization of parliaments,

While welcoming the efforts to ensure the inclusion of the core provisions of the Convention in status of forces and status of missions agreements with host States, the European Union emphasized the fundamental importance of universal acceptance of the Convention.

Its long term viability requires the development over time of a full banking union, fiscal union, economic union, and eventually political union. But the process of further European integration has stalled.

Currently, the eurozone is on the threshold of a banking union, with a fiscal union to follow. But, even with only a banking union, the pressure toward political union will grow.
