The world's population is becoming increasingly urban and three quarters of the urban population growth is occurring in developing countries.

Over the next 15 years, the growth in the world population will be absorbed mainly by urban areas of developing countries, and the world's population will become more urban than rural.

The urban population in Mozambique has experienced a considerable growth, even though such growth has been relatively slow compared to growth in other African countries.

As most of the returnees settle in urban areas, there has been an estimated 6 per cent annual growth rate in the urban population.
