Community Development

The National Development Program (Propenas 2000 2004) advocated two strategies to eradicate poverty, namely (a) satisfaction of the basic needs of the poor and protection of families and community groups living in poverty and, (b) assistance to community groups living in structural poverty.

In India, newborn health forms part of the national Reproductive and Child Health Program. In Ethiopia, newborn care is being incorporated into a new community based healthcare program.

In December 2001, the Department of Family and Community Services launched the Children's Support Program (Child Witness of Family Violence).

It was based on a similar program started in Eskasoni, and studies showed that 89 percent of Eskasoni residents felt that the quality of health care services in their community improved during the program.

The Model enables a full array of service, assessment and program skill development options, with appropriate income support measures, including the Transitional Employment Allowance that assists individuals in moving toward full participation in the community and labour force.

Nippon International Cooperation for Community Development

Since its initial pilot phase in 2001, the Measuring and Improving Kids' Environments (MIKE) program provides program support, training and development to early childhood centres across the province.

Development programmes that work in one community may not necessarily work in another community.

In addition, a Sexually Aggressive Youth Treatment program has begun for youth who are in the correctional centre as well as in the community.

Development of a healthy community in a safe environment

The women's empowerment program, with the main goal of gender equality and justice, stipulated for the first time in the 1999 Broad Guidelines of State Policy, is an integral part of the nation's development program, in particular the national program for the implementation of the CEDAW Convention.

This will be accomplished through the development of a program to include the black population in the Brazilian education.

We also acknowledge the important contributions and roles of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, the Economic Community of Central African States, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the Southern African Development Community.

At the community level, however, such issues were dealt with by Omani women's associations and local community development centres.

Financing for development must be a priority of the world community.

New Brunswick introduced a Prenatal Benefit Program for low income expectant mothers as part of its Early Childhood Development (ECD) investments.

The current program focus is to educate, advocate and actively work towards the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

It provides information on a range of programs and supports for young children and families that are designed and delivered by the Government of Canada, including Maternity and Parental Benefits, the Child Care Expense Deduction, the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program, and the Community Action Program for Children.

In northern Nigeria, the political leaders and the traditional Muslim leaders, they got directly involved in the program to help solve the problems of logistics and community confidence.

The international community could also help by offering the Burundians development assistance.
