Over the longer term, a strong currency promotes efficiency in export industries, further insulating competitiveness from exchange rate effects. Dollar depreciation improves Europe s terms of trade and real income.

The Europeans gladly went along with this charade because they now fear dollar depreciation more than global imbalance. So far, Europe s fragile economic recovery has been based largely on exports.

In the last two months of the year, the dollar experienced a sharp depreciation of 10 per cent, contributing to the overall moderate foreign currency exchange impact for the year.
