Exports have led the recovery in both countries, bolstered by weaker national currencies against the dollar. This brisk export performance has coincided with sluggish domestic demand, associated with unusually high unemployment.

But that's just part of the story. You have a similar trend with currencies currencies going through an extreme time of stability.

However, some claims were presented in other currencies, and some others were presented in United States dollars after conversion from other currencies.

The external situation was then aggravated by a loss of competitiveness, due partly to high domestic inflation and partly to the appreciations of the United States dollar to which currencies in the region were pegged.

Japan s government is able to pay such a low rate of interest because domestic prices have been falling for more than a decade, while the yen has been strengthening against other major currencies. Domestic deflation means that the real interest rate on Japanese bonds is higher than the nominal rate.

The regular resources cash balance at the end of 2004 was 329 million, consisting of 318 million in convertible currencies and 11 million in non convertible currencies.

Most member countries, except Egypt, Palestine and Yemen, peg their national currencies to the dollar, which has brought inflation down to industrial country levels and kept it at manageable levels in the face of the rapid domestic demand expansion.

The amount fluctuates as many frozen accounts are in other currencies.

The proportion of investments in North American currencies was increased to 54 per cent from 48 per cent, in European currencies it was increased to 33 per cent from 30 per cent, and investments in Asian currencies were decreased sharply to 11 per cent from 20 per cent.

These central banks offered their services primarily to domestic actors, but they also extended their largess to foreign private entities. Indeed, even foreign states benefited after central banks entered into swap agreements, giving one another unlimited access to their respective currencies.

In several cases, however, the financial disruption was contained, as some Governments, particularly in Latin America, quickly responded to the threat of contagion they increased interest rates to defend their currencies and restrain domestic spending, while they also tightened fiscal policy.

Since the budget of UNDCP is expressed in United States dollars, the movement of currencies in relation to the dollar can have a sizeable impact on expenditure in other currencies.

Where educational expenses are incurred in any of the currencies set out in part (a) above, the applicable amounts are set out in columns (1) to (6) against those currencies.

And that's what happens to currencies when you don't stand behind them.

And also starting to play around with the idea of alternative currencies.

Based on the United Nations actual requirements for various currencies, the dollar equivalents of the following payments in such currencies were accepted in respect of the bienniums 1996 1997 and 1994 1995.

Thus, the past year s currency alignments have, to some extent, simply brought relative domestic price levels and exchange rates into better balance. But by now, emerging market countries exchange rates, and even more so commodity currencies, have probably overshot on the downside.ampnbsp

Its bond markets remain small, and trading volume is low, because the majority of bonds are held to maturity by domestic investors. This is a matter of considerable importance to central banks, which value liquidity when deciding which currencies to hold as reserve.

They doubt that an alternative development strategy based on boosting domestic demand would succeed. Thus, the real values of their currencies must be kept low relative to the dollar, which means that their reserves now invested in the US must continue to grow.
