In Africa, recent events in the Great Lakes region, especially in eastern Zaire, were deeply disturbing.

In doing so, the SEECP participating States will encourage initiatives originating from the South Eastern European region.

The largest number of bi occupational people inhabit the south eastern region and the smallest number the northern (1.8 per cent) and the north eastern (4.3 per cent) regions.

Reported tensions in eastern Sudan. As in Darfur, there are feelings of tension in eastern Sudan, a poor and underdeveloped region, and that it is marginalized by the central Government.

We have regular consultations with our neighbours, countries from the region and members of the Eastern European regional group.

The Council s plans for 1998 and 1999 include subregional forums in the following countries Ecuador (for the Andean region) Jamaica (for the Caribbean region) Guatemala (for the Central America region) India (for the South Asia region) Fiji (for the Pacific region) Thailand (for the south east Asia region) and the Czech Republic (for the eastern European region).

That would reflect the specific interests of the Eastern European region and ensure the truly global nature of the Convention.

73. The situation regarding citizenship applications by persons living in the region of Eastern Slavonia is discussed below (sect. VIII.F).

88. Since the creation of the Joint Working Group, six new ODPR offices became operational in the Eastern Slavonia region.
