Guidelines on the development and use of core environmental indicators for West Asia are also available.

Recently, the system of environmental indicators of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) was established.

When constructing their indicators, the countries report that they aim to comply with the highest environmental monitoring standards.

Both are expressed via a group of scientific indicators, such as physical, chemical, biological, economic, social, political and environmental.

A set of selected indicators will be designed and implemented to monitor current environmental sustainability trends in the region.

The MDGs constitute a set of time bound and measurable goals, targets and indicators for combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and gender inequality.

Among other activities, UNEP is supporting the data collection work and development of environmental indicators for the countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

As noted in paragraph 5 above, the proportion of land area covered by forests is one of the indicators associated with the Millennium Development Goal on environmental sustainability.

These principles could be applied in the areas of economic development, education, environmental stewardship, and governance, for example, to generate development goals and construct new indicators to measure progress towards these goals.

In the ongoing effort to develop generic indicators for the implementation of the Hyogo Framework, a parallel discussion is being promoted by the Strategy secretariat on revised indicators for the Millennium Development Goals to measure disaster resilience in progress towards reducing poverty and hunger, the provision of water, sanitation, security for slum dwellers and environmental sustainability.

Since the Twenty fourth Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, four intersessional contact groups have been established to discuss the development of a state of the Antarctic environment reporting system, in particular a Web based system for routinely reporting on key environmental indicators.

Environmental management This consists of environmental modification, environmental manipulation and measures to reduce human vector contact.

The strategy will aim to build the capacity of the Governments of the region and other relevant social stakeholders to assess the environmental impacts, costs and benefits of economic and social policies in the region.
