The Ad Hoc Expert Group on Finance and Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies met at Geneva from 15 to 19 December 2003.

One project is currently being implemented in this field under the title of The Determinants of Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) Utilization in Selected Developing Countries .

Less developed countries will need assistance in modern technologies for renewable energy, particularly in rural areas, water management with transfer of environmentally sound technologies (ESTs) as well as capacity building in cleaner and sustainable industrial production.

The issue of financing sustainable forest management has been extensively addressed by the Forum and its ad hoc expert group on financing and transfer of environmentally sound technologies.

Emphasizing the commitments of developed countries in transferring environmentally sound technologies, know how and financing to developing countries in accordance with the provisions of chapter 34 of Agenda 21.

The exhibition on environmentally sound technologies EST Showcase , which will be held in conjunction with the Council Forum, will also hold its opening on the evening of 6 February 2006.

Under this service module UNIDO will address the challenges arising from persistent organic pollutants (POPs), as well as promoting cleaner production (CP) methods and the transfer of environmentally sound technologies (ESTs).

The UNIDO UNEP National Cleaner Production Centre Programme aims at building national cleaner production capacities, fostering dialogue between industry and Government and enhancing investments for transfer and development of environmentally sound technologies.

The Ad Hoc Expert Group on Finance and Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies also noted that the achievement of sustainable forest management can be greatly hindered by policies established outside the forest sector.

Technical and financial implications of the environmentally sound destruction of ozone depleting substances In 2002, the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel's Task Force on Destruction Technologies identified a number of emerging technologies that, while theoretically effective, had not yet demonstrated evidence of technical capability.

6. Calls upon Governments to take further action to mobilize the provision of financial resources, technology transfer, capacity building and the diffusion of environmentally sound technologies, as set out in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation

The Ad Hoc Expert Group on Finance and Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies discussed important dimensions of financing, including the role and status of official development assistance (ODA) and the effectiveness of existing international financing.

The potential of youth to contribute to environmentally sound lifestyle choices and solutions is significant.

In addition, it is made clear that, in particular in developing countries and countries with economies in transition, there is a continuing priority need to address issues of capacity building and the transfer of environmentally sound technologies.

The report of the Ad Hoc Expert Group on Finance and Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies provides a more in depth analysis of financial constraints impeding sustainable forest management, as well as a number of recommendations for addressing them.

9. Invites Member States, especially those in a position to do so, and relevant regional and international organizations to allocate financial and technical resources to support the development of efficient, productive and environmentally sound technologies for sustainable agriculture in developing countries

The greatest challenge in that regard was to acquire relevant technology that was affordable, efficient and environmentally sound.

(a) Tthe environmentally sound management of wastes consisting of, containing or contaminated with PCDDs orand PCDFs or both

(ii) decide to cooperate closely for its effective implementation of sustainable development activities, through collaborative capacity building efforts in environmental management, exchanges in technological and scientific know how and the development of state of the art environmentally sound technologies among developing countries.

Recognizing the need to realize the full potential of technology in combating climate change, and that substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the long term will rely to a large extent on the development, deployment, diffusion and transfer of environmentally sound technologies,

The objective is to review policy instruments for stimulating the diffusion of ESTs and promoting environmentally sound technological development.

Preparation of technical guidelines on the environmentally sound management of wastes resulting from surface treatment of metals and plastics (Y17)

In line with these directions, the activities of the subprogramme will promote socially, economically and environmentally sound human settlements policies.
