The European Parliament,

51. On 12 June 1997, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the elections in Indonesia and the situation in East Timor.

Elections to Parliament and local councils were held regularly.

Municipal elections were planned for 2006 and elections to the national parliament for the following year.

On Saturday, Oriol Junqueras, one of nine Catalan leaders in pre trial jail since late last year, announced he would run in European Parliament elections next year.

The 2004 elections for the European Parliament had already shown that the level of discontent with the Union was high. Voters heavily punished almost all national governments.

But the European Commission is not accountable to the European Parliament in the same way that a national government is accountable to its parliament. The EU s member governments name the members of the European Commission, and the Parliament lacks an explicit right to veto them.

In short, the global economic crisis has destabilized the ideological divides that have long defined the European political scene and has created new dividing lines. These new chasms might be the most important long term outcome of the European Parliament elections.

The record level of abstention in the recent European Parliament elections is further proof of that growing cynicism and alienation. Of course, it is neither possible nor desirable to clone Obama in each of the European Union s 27 member states.

However, in the elections of October 2001 the Jatiya Party won 14 seats in Parliament.

Two women were elected to the European Parliament (Siiri Oviir, Marianne Mikko), one of them (Marianne Mikko) is currently the head of the Moldova delegation of the European Parliament.

The regulation is expected to be adopted by the European Parliament and the European Council in 2006.

Throughout the EU, people are asking, What is Europe doing to address the crisis? The answer is not nearly enough, and the political price may be high at next summer s European Parliament elections.

The independent expert stressed the importance of free and fair elections, and that the Somaliland authorities would be strongly encouraging the Parliament to hold the scheduled elections.

In this environment, the upcoming European Parliament elections seem tailor made for extremist parties, with recent public opinion polls suggesting that the National Front will come out on top in France. European elections leave most citizens indifferent, which translates into low voter turnout except among those who, defined by what they oppose, wish to express their anger and frustration with the status quo.

But there is another reason for the lack of interest in the EU elections. The European Parliament has power, but it deals with issues that, while important to voters, do not top their list of concerns.

In the most recent elections in 2004 19 per cent of those elected had been women, up from 15 per cent in 1999, while 38 per cent of those elected to the European Parliament in 2004 had been women.
