Obstructionism and organized crime are likely, however, to continue to require strong and concerted action on the part of the European Union, including EUFOR, the European Union Police Mission and the local authorities.

We have appealed to the European Union to see if they can make police officers available to us just for that period.

The Office of the High Representative, with the European Commission and the EU Customs and Fiscal Assistance Office, invested heavily in ongoing support for the Indirect Taxation Administration.

EUFOR, in cooperation with the European Union Police Mission, continues to support the local police, including the State Border Service and State Investigation and Protection Agency, and other law enforcement agencies such as the Indirect Taxation Authority.

Projects on combating money laundering and terrorist financing are developed by the Office of the Co ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities (OCEEA) and the police capacity building programmes by the Strategic Police Matters Unit (SPMU).

The Committee welcomes the establishment in 2001 of an office of the Reykjavik police functioning as a link between the police and persons of foreign origin which, inter alia, refers complaints made by foreigners to the competent authorities.

UNMIS staff monitor the Government sponsored tribal reconciliation process and together with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS) police, facilitate dialogue between internally displaced persons and local police.

Commends the International Police Task Force for all its efforts, welcomes the successful completion of the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 31 December 2002, and also welcomes the smooth transition to the European Union Police Mission, which will also work on reforming the police management structures in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Once their status has been determined by a body composed of representatives of the police, the prosecutor's office and the court, they are protected by a special police unit designed to provide effective protection in complex cases such as those involving war crimes.
