The successor State (Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) was admitted to the United Nations by General Assembly resolution 55 12 of 1 November 2000.

In its resolution 47 1 of 22 September 1992, the Assembly similarly indicated that it considered that the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) could not continue automatically the membership of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the United Nations. It therefore decided that the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) should apply for membership in the United Nations and that it should not participate in the work of the Assembly.

Following the adoption of the Constitutional Charter of Serbia and Montenegro by the Assembly of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on 4 February 2003, the name of the State of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was changed to Serbia and Montenegro .
