The relevant paragraphs of resolution 59 25, which are reaffirmed in the draft resolution on fisheries this year, recognize that it is for States and regional fisheries management organizations, as appropriate, to regulate fisheries and their impact on vulnerable marine ecosystems and to take decisions on any interim and long term management measures.

What actions are required to improve cooperation among States in the conservation and management of high seas fisheries?

The vital role of regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements in this regard was highlighted by one delegation.

MPAs are a valuable tool for fisheries management because they allow local control of the marine food supply.

Welcomes and urges further efforts by regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements, as a matter of priority, to strengthen and modernize their mandates to include an ecosystem approach to fisheries management and biodiversity considerations, where those aspects are lacking, to ensure that they effectively contribute to long term conservation and management of marine living resources

In discharging those responsibilities, the coastal States and the regional fisheries management organizations are afforded a wide range of discretion when choosing the most appropriate management measures.
